Mary Hill Akins was born October 5, 1926 in College Park, Georgia. She was one of three girls and grew up during the Great Depression. After WWII, she married Grady Ward Akins, the boy next door. They were happily married for 58 years. The Akins family moved to Gadsden in 1962. She loved playing bridge, watching Auburn football and basketball, golfing, hosting her garden club, and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Gadsden. She was spunky, funny, quick-witted, and made friends easily because she took the time to look for the best in people. She is survived by her four children: Bruce Akins (Betsy), Craig Akins (Karen), Donna Hagedorn, and David Akins (Linda). Known by “MeMaw” to her Grandchildren: Miles Akins (Michelle), Molly Taylor (Ken), Kelly Ray (Adam), Jamie Sawyer (Andrew), Mark Akins (Corey), Brian Hagedorn (Jennifer), Becky Hagedorn, Amanda Fant (Scott), Lori Smith (Zane), Matthew Akins (Leslie), Katie Marie Montgomery (Kevin). She also has 16 great-grandchildren, and one grand-cat (Jolene). Known as “Cool Mary” to her three nieces: Teresa Barrett, Leslie Bleier, and Kay Landoli (Joe).
She will be greatly missed, but she trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and is with Him now. She’s also reunited with the love of her life, Grady Akins.
Pallbearers will be Grandsons and Grandsons-in-law.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for memorial contributions to be made to First Baptist Church of Gadsden.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Layla Wren, Kindred Hospice, Pam Baker, Shelly Newborn.
