Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Collier-Butler Funeral Chapel for Porter White McKinney, who went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 29, 2015.
Porter White McKinney, 90, Gadsden, was a WWII veteran serving in the US Navy Rescue for two and a half years at Whiting Field, Milton, FL. He began his work career at Pollock Mother Co in 1946 followed by John Thomas Ford and Crown Dodge where he left to further his career at Alabama Cable Vision and retired from Group W Cable in 1986.
He was an avid sportsman in football, baseball, golf as well as a Big Tide and Braves fan. Porter was a center and linebacker for the Gadsden High Tigers in 1942 and went undefeated with 7 wins and 2 ties. He was selected All County player at this position. He was captain elect in 1943 but was drafted in service before the season started.
Porter McKinney always called Briarmeade Golf Club his second home and since Jean’s death in May 2005, spent most of his time there as his home was empty. He was GM/VP of Briarmeade from 1990 to 1995.
Porter was preceded in death by his father and mother, Jim and Chester McKinney, brother and sister in law, Jimmy and Loraine McKinney and his loving wife and best friend for 61 and a half years.
He is survived by his children, Mike (Patsy) McKinney, Jeanette (Tater) Sims and Teddi (Ricky) Ford, twelve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, nephews, Jim McKinney and Duncan McKinney, Orange Park and nieces, Jean Moore, Tuscaloosa and Faye Hindsman, Gadsden. He is also survived by many longtime friends too numerous to mention.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be Moe Smith, Charlie Cambron, Bobby Bright, Steve Craft, Dan Ellison and Richard Bohannon.
In lieu of flowers, Porter requested memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Big Oak Ranch.
Special thanks to Dr. Thomas Corley and staff; Southern Care and Hospice, especially to his caretakers Jess Allsup and Virgie Gowens; and for the exceptional care given by Riverview Regional Hospital. To our special friends Debbie Brooks, thank you for being there to help and comfort him in his final hours.
Family will receive friends Monday night from 6-9 p.m. at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation Tuesday one hour prior to service. Following the service, burial will be at Forrest Cemetery.
