
Funeral services will at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2013 at First United Methodist Church of Gadsden, for Ronald Gene Cannon, 76, of Gadsden, who passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Revs. Harvey Beck, Bill Whitwer and Jeffrey Washington will officiate. Burial will be at Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Mr. Cannon was a lifelong resident of Gadsden, AL. After an Architectural apprenticeship with Paul Hofferbert and receiving his architectural certification, he opened his practice in Gadsden. He was a member of many organizations, including: The American Institute of Architects (Chapter President from 1979-1988), Gadsden Metro Chamber of Commerce (where he was a Former Board Member and received the Small Business Award for 2000), Professional Member of the International Code Council, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Boaz Chamber of Commerce. He was also very active in the community. He served as Past President of the Board of Directors for Holy Comforter House; Chairman of the City of Gadsden Planning Commission for 32 years; past member of the Board of Directors for Gadsden Metro Chamber of Commerce; member of the Board of Code Appeals for the City of Gadsden; Vice President of the Board of Directors for Thirteenth Place; and a member of the Pitman Theatre Restoration Committee. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church of Gadsden. He loved his work, loved his family, and held dear his close friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Virgil Cannon; mother, Ruby Cannon; and sister, Joanne Leonard.
He is survived by his wife, Adele Dickson Cannon; daughter, Allie Brown Cannon; and son, Ron Cannon, Jr., who died on the same day following his father’s death.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Nestor Kampakis, Freddy Golden, Dr. Alan Loveman, Barry Loveman, Paul Panik, Gary, Stanfield, Robert McElroy, Jr., Pete Golden, and James Tarzan Golden.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
