

Samuel, affectionately known as Sam, was born on February 18th, 1947, in Gadsden, AL, the son of Charles Whitney Hood and Cartie Bell Hood (Nash). He grew up in Rainbow City, where he developed lifelong friendships and a deep love for his family. After graduating from Etowah High School in 1965, he was drafted by the Army where he proudly served in the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1968. Afterward Sam went on to a career at United Parcel Service, to which he dedicated himself for 31 years.
A loving husband to Rita for 55 years. Together, they raised 2 children: He was a devoted father, always there to offer guidance, love, support and a humorous anecdote to lighten the room. He cherished his time with his beloved family and friends and his presence on holidays and vacations brought warmth and joy to those around him.
Sam had many passions in life. Alongside his passion for his faith, his family, and his friends, was his love of Classic cars. This passion for Classic cars provided him with abundant joy and countless memories with friends and family. He was known for his genuine ability to connect with people. His warm smile and his sense of humor could light up any room. Sam was a member of Summit Church in Rainbow City, where he enjoyed worshiping each Sunday with many friends and relatives.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita, his children Randy Hood and Jason Hood (Rebecca), grandchildren Alaina & Samuel Hood. He is also survived by his brother Larry Hood (Carolyn), sisters in law Betty Hood, Deb Hooks, and countless nieces and nephews.
Sam was preceded in death by brother Johnny Hood; brother Ronnie Hood; brother Oscar Hood (Kay); brother Jack Hood; sister Helen Hood; sister Bobbie Mashburn (Paul); brother David Hood (Sonja); sister Mildred Cornelius (Bill); sister Elizabeth Waddell (Ed); sister Katherine McCullers (Freddie G); brother Edward Hood (Deltha); and parents Charles and Cartie Belle Hood.
A funeral service to celebrate Sam’s life will be held at 2 PM on Saturday July 19th at Summit Church located at 3225 Rainbow Drive, Rainbow City, AL. Friends and family are invited to attend and pay their respects beginning at 1 PM. Graveside Service will held at 3 PM at Rainbow Memorial Gardens with Military Honors following the funeral service. Pallbearers will include Brandon Hollis, Jamie Willis, Derrick Hood, Clay Hood, Jacob Harris, Ricky Barnett, and David Barnett. Honorable pallbearer is David Santos.
