Steve "Rex" Smith

Rex was a devout Christian who loved the Lord deeply. His collection of Bibles, filled with his personal notes and highlighted verses, was evidence of his devotion to learning all he could about his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved sharing the knowledge he had gained whenever the opportunity presented itself.

A lifelong learner, Rex was also an avid Alabama fan and absolutely loved Alabama football, whether they were having a good year or a bad year. He spent many years in the sales industry, where his charismatic personality, kindness, and professionalism left a lasting impression on the many customers he served throughout the years. Rex never met a stranger and could talk to anyone, anywhere.

Even during the months leading up to his passing, Rex continued to do his best to maintain a thankful attitude despite the pain he was experiencing. The nurses and caregivers who cared for him during his illness often commented on how kind and polite he was and what a sweetheart he was—and he truly was.

Above all, Rex loved his family. He dearly loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful “Papa” to his 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Rex was an encourager who loved building his family up through his words of advice, wisdom, and encouragement. His love for the Lord and his family, along with the kindness he showed to others, will remain an enduring part of his legacy.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Euel “Jake” Smith and Myrtle Smith; and five siblings, Johnny Smith, Jeanine Auito (Vic), June Myers, Frankie Ann Smith (Roy), and Jackie Smith.

Those left to cherish his memory include his best friend and caregiver, Sharon Smith; his children, Chris Smith (Robin), Cameron Smith (Maudie), and Lauryn Moore (Jeremy); 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his adopted brothers, Tommy and Vann Culberson; and a host of special nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members, and friends.

A visitation for Rex will be held Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Collier-Butler Funeral & Cremation Services, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m.

In accordance with his wishes, Rex was cremated. He will be laid to rest at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Southside, Alabama.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses, care staff, and physicians on the fifth floor, PCU, and CCU for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Rex and his family throughout his illness. They would also like to express their appreciation to Patrick and Perry with Compassus Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

Last but certainly not least, the family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Cody Neely with Collier-Butler Funeral Home, who went above and beyond to help their family during this difficult time. His care and assistance meant more than words can express, and the family is deeply grateful.

Rex will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His family takes comfort in knowing that the faith he held so dearly throughout his life remained at the center of who he was, and the legacy of faith, love, kindness, and encouragement he leaves behind will continue to live on through those whose lives he touched.
