
Funeral services will be held for Virginia Costner Chaffin, 91, Gadsden, on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. The Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Dr. Richard Trader will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Virginia rested at home surrounded by her family until joining her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 31, 2013. She was a faithful member of Twelfth Street Baptist Church where she served on many committees and was involved in volunteer work wherever she was needed. She was a very Godly Christian woman who was always willing to serve.
Virginia graduated from Gaston High School where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She graduated from Gadsden Business College prior to her marriage to the love of her life, Frank Chaffin. She had a friendly, outgoing personality who never met a stranger. She also was a talented seamstress who did professional quality work for her children and family all of her adult life. Virginia was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Frank Chaffin, her parents W.H. (Red) and Beulah Costner, and son-in-law Gerald Kelley. She is survived by daughters, Gail Chaffin Kelley and Nan (Tootsie) Chaffin (Jerry) Cheaves; beloved granddaughter, Misty Gail Kelley; brother, Oswald (Oz) Costner; nieces, Cathy Eaves Back, and Glenda Chaffin (Phillip) Selman; nephews, Gari (Renee’) Chaffin, and Mike (Carol) Costner; and a host of grandnieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Cheaves, Mike Costner, Kevin Hale, John Hamiter, Jim Hicks, and Fred Overholtzer. Honorary pallbearers will be Durward DuBose, Bill Hale, Cecil Hamiter, and Steve Livengood. The family expresses special thanks to Comfort Care Hospice staff, nurses and doctors; home caregivers, daughter, Nan Cheaves, nieces, Cathy Back, Jana Gilbert, Kim Whorton and Madge Martin; MANNA staff and volunteers; family friend and beautician, Gail Jenkins; and her physician, Dr. T. Dwight Harper.
The family will accept flowers, but prefers memorials to The Salvation Army of Gadsden.
