

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 12:30 in the Collier-Butler Chapel for Virginia Leona (Emerson) Mackey, 89, who passed away Monday, April 9, 2012. Rev. Jay Stewart will officiate, burial in Rainbow Memorial Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Service is directing.
Virginia Leona (Emerson) Mackey was born on January 31, 1923 to James T. and Mary Emerson in Cordova, AL. She was raised in Alabama City and was a member of the first band at Emma Samson High School, where she graduated in 1942. On September 20, 1942 she married David Ray Mackey who was the love of her life since the first day of the first grade. She retired from Kroger in 1974. She has been a lifelong devout member of Dwight Baptist Church, where she taught the 1st grade Sunday school class for 40 years along with many years of teaching Vacation Bible School. She was most happy when she was taking care of others or listening to her family members play music. She was a wonderful cook and cake decorator and enjoyed crafts and hummingbirds. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, and a doting grandmother. She adored her Lord and her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David R. Mackey, son; David R. Mackey Jr., parents, Mr. & Mrs. James and Mary (West) Emerson and sister; Eula Mae Holland.
She is survived by her granddaughter: Dawn (Brian) Beck, great-grandchildren; Jason and Lauren Beck, Daughter–in-law, Susan Mackey, sister; Doris Corbin of Griffin, GA, brothers and sisters-in law; the late W.J. (Tempie) Mackey, Gene (Jerrie) Mackey and Betty (Sentell) Killingsworth,.
Honorary Pallbearers will be; Brian Beck, Jason Beck, Gene Mackey, Scott Corbin, Randy Mackey and David Rogers.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Gadsden Regional Medical Center and to her church family at Dwight Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Senior Trip Fund at Dwight Baptist Church.
