In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Robyn Howson, who passed away at the age of 29 after battling ovarian cancer.
David is survived by his loving wife, Sandy Howson; his brothers, Mark Howson (Roberta) and Greg Howson (Susan); his beloved daughter, Kara Howson; his sons, Jeremy Gunn and Joshua Gunn; and his cherished grandson, Cameron Boyer, who was the light of his life.
As a child, David had the unique opportunity to live in several states and travel to numerous countries with his parents while his father served in the military. During that time, the family lived in places such as Guam and Okinawa. These early experiences exposed David to different cultures and parts of the world, sparking a lifelong love of travel and adventure that stayed with him throughout his life.
David joined the Columbus Police Department in 1974 and proudly served the citizens of Columbus for 34 years before retiring. Over the course of his career, he held a variety of assignments that reflected his dedication to the job and his confidence. He began on Freeway Patrol, before his strong investigative skills led him to become a Detective, where he assisted with financial investigations involving money laundering and other financial crimes.
David was later selected for a special assignment on loan to the United States Secret Service. This role also brought many benefits for him and his family, including the incredible opportunity to meet several Presidents of the United States and other dignitaries, and let his family experience a tour on Air Force Two. As his career progressed, he earned the rank of Sergeant. He also served in Vice before stepping down from the force.
Although David took great pride in his work and served with integrity, those who knew him remember his wonderful sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh and had a special talent for lighting the room with a perfectly timed joke or witty remark.
Outside of his career, David was known as the ultimate trip planner. Family vacations were carefully organized down to the minute, ensuring every moment was filled with adventure and memories. David and Sandy loved traveling the United States with their children and grandson Cameron. He especially enjoyed taking his wife on vacation and sharing the beauty of the world with her.
David was a man of his word, known for his integrity, humility, and deep faith. He loved his family and his Savior, Jesus Christ, with his whole heart. More than anything, David had an unwavering desire to make his wife happy. He was her Huckleberry.
David’s other greatest joy was his grandson, Cameron. Having one grandchild was more than enough for him, and he happily spoiled Cameron every chance he got. The two shared an incredibly special bond and were inseparable to the very end.
