Judith Elaine Haas, 79, of Gahanna, Ohio, passed away on August 9, 2026. She is survived by her daughter, Laura (Brian) Alloway; her son, John (Megan) Haas; her grandchildren, John Braydon Haas, Nox W. Alloway, Alia Alloway, and Delaney Haas; her brother, Ted (Sonia) Fyffe, along with many nephews and nieces, and other family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Haas, along with three sisters and two brothers.
Elaine was born on April 10, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio into a large, loving family. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt whose life was defined by the extraordinary love she gave to others. Elaine was gentle, funny, kind and endlessly supportive, expressing her love through her constant presence and her willingness to care for the people around her.
Meeting in Columbus when John was stationed on Rickenbacker Air Force Base, Elaine and John shared 53 years of marriage and built a life centered on love and family. Together, they were their family’s most devoted cheerleaders, proudly celebrating every game, grade, degree and accomplishment.
Having waited to realize her dream of motherhood, Elaine chose to stay home to raise her children. She supported their every interest and aspiration, whether it involved karate, camps or even breakdancing lessons. She made certain her children always knew that they were loved, celebrated and free to become exactly who they were meant to be.
When her children became parents within a few months of one another, Elaine’s circle of love expanded again. She eagerly volunteered to care for her grandchildren while their parents worked, even giving up several winters in Florida with John so that she could be part of their everyday lives. She was much more than their caregiver; she helped raise them and became another mother figure whose love, guidance and steady presence helped shape who they are today.
Elaine had a special affection for babies and young children and rarely passed a little one without stopping to smile or offer a kind word. Her nurturing spirit also extended beyond her family. Through her involvement with TWIG, she devoted countless volunteer hours to supporting Children’s Hospital and the children and families it served.
Throughout her life, Elaine quietly stepped forward whenever someone she loved needed care. She supported her sister and later her mother through terminal illnesses and cared devotedly for John during his battle with leukemia. She never sought attention for what she did. She was simply the constant, behind-the-scenes presence who gave her time and herself freely out of love.
A talented and enthusiastic scrapbooker, Elaine was rarely without a camera when her children and grandchildren were nearby. Her family affectionately called her “Mama-razzi” because she photographed nearly every milestone, celebration, vacation and ordinary family moment. Through the scrapbooks she lovingly created, Elaine preserved a priceless history of the family she treasured.
Elaine’s legacy lives on in the children she raised and the grandchildren she helped shape. Her family was blessed and honored to have her in their lives. She will be forever loved, forever missed and never forgotten.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 11 to 11:30 a.m., followed by visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Schoedinger Margarum Northeast, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna, Ohio.
