James Joseph Neuvirth, 85, of Westerville, Ohio (formerly of Sarasota, Florida) passed away Friday, September 1, 2023. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 5, 1937 and adopted by the late Joseph and Madelon (Barr) Neuvirth. He is survived by his children; Pam (Dan) Hall of Tennessee, and Terri (Joe) Mayerhofer, of Westerville, grandchildren; Andrew (Megan) Shough, Addie Shough (Matt Lehky) and Angie Mitchell, great-grandchildren; Ashlynn, Oliver and Beckett. He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Michael A. Neuvirth.
Jim (Jarhead) was born at Ohio State University Hospital, attended school at Immaculate Conception and St Thomas Aquinas High School. Jim joined the Marines in October 1954 and received an honorable discharge as Corporal (E3) in October 1962. Jim retired from the United States Post Office to Sarasota, Florida in the late 90's, and returned to Ohio in 2016, but he never truly retired and worked up until April of this year at the Amvets in Westerville. Jim loved the Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds, and could recite stats on both. Jim volunteered at the Florida voter registration booths and was known to have played euchre 3 nights a week when he moved back to Ohio. Sweet, kind and caring are the words most used to describe Jim when someone mentioned his name. Jim and his son in law, Joe, had a very special bond and loved to watch and talk sports together. Jim was married twice, but bachelorhood seemed to suit him best. Jim is a Marine and Jarhead was always his license plate, but when he moved back to Ohio he had to change it to DVDOG and he displayed it proudly. Our hope is that the next Marine who claims it does the same. Semper Fi, dad.
A Visitation will held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 5pm-7pm at Schoedinger Northeast, 1051 East Johnstown Rd. Gahanna, OH 43230. A private burial service will be held for the family. Memorial contributions can be made to The American Stroke Organization at https://www.stroke.org/en/.
