

He graduated from Charleston Catholic High School where he played sports and played on the 1962 Charleston Catholic High School State Champs football team. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1967 and with a Master’s degree in 1985.
John was so blessed to spend his career in Education. He taught Social Studies and later became an administrator at Gahanna Lincoln High School. He loved his work and moreover his students and fellow educators.
John married Carolyn Lucas and they were happily married for 45 years. In 2018 he married the wonderful Karen Hogan.
Predeceased by parents Boyd (Hobby) and Patricia Marie (Patty) Howard, brother Mike Howard.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Karen Hogan. He is survived by his brother Tom (Rebecca) Howard, and nieces Elizabeth (John) Magninat and Amy Howard, Jeanie (Ken) Burch, Jerri (Frank) Churchill, and nephews Joseph (Jessica) Howard, Douglas Howard and Greg (Kim) Lucas.
He is survived by cousin Joyce Murphy and other wonderful cousins and great nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Fr. Edward Griffin who guided me in so many good ways when I was growing up. He was a good priest.
John had been honored with these special distinctions:
Named 2004 Catholic Man of the Year Diocese of Columbus, a Scholarship in his name from Gahanna Lincoln High School PTA, and the John Howard award for Classroom Teachers at Gahanna Lincoln High School.
Visitation will be held at Schoedinger Northeast Funeral Home, 1051 E Johnstown Road, Gahanna, OH 43230, on June 4, 2026, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following morning, Friday, June 5, at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church, 807 Havens Corners Rd, Columbus, OH 43230, beginning at 11:00am.
Interment Spring Hill Cemetery, 210 11th Street, Huntington, WV 25701 at a later date.
In lieu of flowers you may choose to make a donation to The Charitable Works Committee at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in John’s name.
