Lorna Sue Berkhouse, affectionately known as Sue, passed away peacefully at home in Gahanna, Ohio, on June 22, 2024, at age 85. Sue was born on January 7, 1939, in Oak Hill, West Virginia, to the late Marcellus and Norma (Akers) Harrold. As the cherished youngest of three children, she brought joy and light to everyone she encountered. Sue’s faith walk began in her early years, igniting a passionate and unwavering devotion to the Lord that guided her throughout life.
A proud alumna of Fairmont High School in Kettering, Ohio, Sue's high school years were marked by a blossoming talent for singing and a deep love for the theater. These culminated in a memorable performance in the musical Oklahoma put on by her school.
Sue's adult life was a testament to her dedication to family, faith, and community. In 1962, she married James "Jim" Berkhouse. Together, they built a loving home for their four children to be raised. As a devoted homemaker, Sue found immense joy in caring for her family, ensuring their home was filled with love, warmth, and happiness. Her children were her pride and joy, and she dedicated herself to nurturing and supporting them in every way possible. Later in life, as a devoted "Memaw" to her grandchildren, Sue provided boundless love and created cherished memories that will be treasured forever.
Sue spent many years as a beloved babysitter, known to many of those kids as "Aunt Sue." She opened her home to care for countless children as young as six weeks old. Her nurturing presence and gentle spirit created a safe and loving environment for all the children she cared for. Sue was the bookkeeper and cashier in the cafeteria at Chemical Abstract Service for 25 years. She loved seeing her regulars daily as they came through her line and then meeting their families when the cafeteria hosted special events throughout the years. Her warm smile and caring nature made her a cherished colleague and friend to many. Sue's unwavering commitment to her job was evident in everything she did, and she was known for her kindness and dedication.
Her love for music was a significant part of her life. She sang joyfully in the Minerva Park United Methodist Church choir, where her beautiful voice was used to worship the Lord. She also sang with the Worthington Songsters, sharing her gift of music and bringing joy to countless hearts. Musicals were her go-to movie selection, but nothing topped "The Sound of Music" with Julie Andrews as her favorite.
Sue was also passionate about knitting, creating countless prayer shawls that brought comfort and solace to those in need. She enjoyed the time she shared with friends while they knitted together.
