Paul lived a life grounded in faith, family and hard work. He loved the Lord and was a faithful member of the Gahanna Freewill Baptist Church, where he was well known and deeply loved by fellow parishioners. His faith was a steady presence throughout his life.
Paul was a master carpenter, taking immense pride in his skill and craftsmanship. He always joked he was the “fastest nailer around,” a claim few would argue. In his earlier days, he worked on the railroad in Kentucky. Paul valued honest labor and a job done right.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Paul loved Wii Bowling and was a dedicated member of the Wii Bowling League at the Gahanna Senior Center, where he had bowled since 2008. A true competitor at heart, he was especially proud of achieving 237 perfect “300 games”. He also enjoyed word search puzzles, WWE wrestling, bluegrass music (especially the one and only Ralph Stanley), and his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. In his younger years, he loved hunting, fishing, golfing, and bowling with his best friend Wendal.
Paul was known for being a little ornery and wonderfully stubborn. Those who knew him well understood that behind his stubborn streak was a man who was deeply devoted to his family and friends and never met a stranger.
Family meant everything to Paul, and he cherished his role as a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. His life was rich with his relationships, laughter, faith and memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Smith and Sandra (Gregg) Huggins; his grandchildren Olivia, Nathaniel and Kylie; his great-grandchildren Jocelyn, Natalee and Kian; and his great-great grandson, Alexander.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Raymond Castle, and his brothers, Harold J, Delmar, James, Carson and Grover Castle.
Paul's funeral service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Schoedinger Northeast Funeral Home, 1051 E Johnstown Road, Gahanna, OH 43230, beginning at 4:00pm. Visitation will take place following the funeral service from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
Paul will be laid to rest at Evergreen Union Cemetery in Waverly, Ohio on Saturday, January 24 at 11:00am.
