Dick graduated from Atlantic High School, Oak Hall, VA on June 1, 1951 and enlisted in the US Air Force on September 25, 1951. After Basic Training at Sampson AFB, Lake Senica, NY and NE MO State Teachers College, Kirksville, MO, then to Lockbourne AFB, Lockbourne, OH. After two months at Lockbourne AFB, Dick was transferred to the 307th Bomb Wing, Kadena AFB, Okinawa, Japan. Dick’s assignment with the 307th was to maintain what was defined as “Fly Away Kits” for B29 aircraft flying Bomb Missions over North Korea on an alternating basis with the 97th Bomb Wing out of Japan. After some six months at Kadena AFB, Dick was transferred back to Lockbourne AFB and assigned to the 26th Strategic Resonance Wing, (all jet aircraft) which was just forming.
While in this assignment, Dick and two friends, who had a day off, drove to an Amusement Park, which was at Buckeye Lake, OH. This is where Dick met his future wife, Evelyn Sabo. Evelyn’s Uncle had brought Evelyn, her sister and a friend to the Lake for an afternoon of enjoyment. After a deployment to a Royal AFB in England for forty-five days, Dick was transferred back to Lockbourne AFB. While in England Dick decided that he had met his future lifetime partner (Evelyn M. Sabo) and would ask Evelyn if she would consider an engagement for marriage upon his return to the States.
Upon returning to the States, Dick took leave to visit his parents and he informed them of his decision. Dick’s parents informed him that his marriage was his decision not theirs. So, returning to Ohio, Dick arranged for a date with Evelyn to ask if she would consider an engagement for marriage. She agreed, so on October 29, 1955 we were married in St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, Columbus, Ohio.
Dick took his Honorable Discharge from the USAF on September 25, 1955 and started employment with Battelle’s Metallurgical Dept. as a Lab Technician along with studies towards a BS Degree in Business Administration at Franklin University. As Dick worked on a Titanium Alloy development project and progressed towards his BS Degree, Dick was asked to consider other assignments in administration, such as correspondence with questions from US Government Defense Contractors regarding their work on Titanium Metal Alloys used in the defense of our Country.
After five (5) years of marriage on December 28, 1960 Evelyn gave birth to twin sons Richard B. & Steven C. of which we are both extremely proud. Dick continued to work in the administration side of Battelle’s Metallurgical Department in various administration task, such as Assistance Business Manager and Business Manager. After 26 yrs with the Metallurgical Dept., Dick was asked if he would consider joining a new department to be known as the Battelle Project Management Division, (BPMD).
This work involved a contract from the US Dept. of Energy on Nuclear Waste and required Dick’s moving to Texas in which he finally agreed and relocated where he remained for another 7 months. In various cost related positions until the contract was killed by the two Texas Senator’s supporting Texas citizens opposed to having Nuclear Waste buried in their State. After having been employed by Battelle for thirty-six (36) years Dick decided to retire.
