Dr. Robert F. (Bob) Rodgers, 84, died on August 12, 2022 of natural causes. For 40 years, Bob was professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs at The Ohio State University. His tenure went from 1970 until his retirement in 2010. He also served as Director of the Student Personnel Assistantship internship program during 20 of those years. Bob created and taught graduate courses in moral, cognitive and psychosocial developmental psychology, personality types and group training. He conducted research in these same areas including the application of developmental theory and research in the designs of practice in Student Affairs, leadership and organizational development.
Bob loved both teaching and research. He was devoted to advising, coaching and facilitating the professional growth of graduate students. The graduate academic program in Higher Education and Student Affairs at The Ohio State University and the Ohio College Personnel Association of the state of Ohio, both chose to name their “Outstanding Graduate Student” awards for “Robert F. (Bob) Rodgers”.
Robert was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas by Joyce and C.A. Rodgers. He earned his B.S. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1961, his M.A. degree in Counseling Psychology from The Ohio State University in 1965 and his PH.D. degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University in 1970. He did post-doctoral work in developmental psychology at Harvard University in summers of 1983 with Lawrence Kohlberg, 1984 with Carole Gilligan and 1985 with Robert Kegan.
Bob is survived by his wife Sheila Rodgers; children Anne “Kip” Watson, of Dallas, Texas, David Rodgers of Dublin, Ohio, Marcela Vucovich, of Pensacola, Florida, T.R. (Stephanie) Ellis, Garrett (Amy) Burkam and Trevis (Michelle) Davie; brother Johnny Rodgers and his wife Vivian; sister Cindy Rodgers Lewis and her husband Ron Lewis; beloved grandchildren and extended family members. Bob loved just being with Sheila, playing golf, listening to classical music and writing about current issues using psychology, spirituality and the Integral Framework of Ken Wilber.
A Celebration of Life will take place from 4-6pm Friday, August 19, 2022 at Schoedinger Northeast, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, OH 43230. Those who wish may contribute to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Robert Rodgers.
