Steve was born in Mansfield, Ohio and spent most of his young life in Cleveland Ohio and Monroe Michigan. Steve was a graduate of University of Rio Grande in Ohio where he met his late wife Joan Withem Gilliland. They raised a family in Westerville, Ohio.
Steve was known for his passion for Ohio sports including Ohio State football, Columbus Blue Jackets and Cleveland Browns. He used to call this the “3 B’s” for Blue Jackets, Buckeyes and Browns. He was an avid reader and found great joy in thought provoking films, Ireland, genealogy, music, spicy and exotic cuisine, travel and nightly Jeopardy. We are sure he’s looking everywhere for Tony Bourdain and Alex Trebek.
You could always find him on the bleachers or sidelines of his grandchildren’s sporting events or academic achievements from elementary school to college.
He is preceded in death by his parents and former wife Joan Withem Gilliland, and brother David Gilliland. He is survived by his son and daughter in law Vince and Mary Gilliland, Daughter Samantha Sabo, Daughter Stephanie Schaffnit and son in law Taj Schaffnit, and beloved grandchildren Evan Sabo and Paige Endicott, Savannah and Matthew Berry, Andrew Gilliland and Jessica Skelly, and Patrick Gilliland.
Steve was a man of few words but to honor his love of Ireland, genealogy and Irish films, we will leave you with this quote from the grandfather to his grandson in the move Belfast “I am going nowhere you won’t find me”
Special thanks to his amazing friends and home family at United Church Homes and to the committed and compassionate team at Capital City Hospice.
Steve’s wishes were for a private family memorial. You can find a tribute board on Schoedinger Funeral homes website. Donations can be made in his honor to Capital City Hospice - https://capitalcityhospice.com/donate/
