Wayne was born in 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Joseph and Hildegard Gramke. The second youngest of six children, he grew up in Cincinnati on the same street as Geraldine "Gerry" Wiest. They knew each other as children and later became high school sweethearts. Wayne and Gerry married in 1959 and built a life together centered on faith, family and an enduring love for one another.
Together, Wayne and Gerry raised four children: Mike Gramke (Lori), Kim Bedzyk (Zeke), Tracy McHugh (Matt) and Scott Gramke (Lisa). Wayne was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, and great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved wife, Gerry; his sister, Mary Carol Ernst; his brother- and sister-in-law, John and Pat Burden, whom he loved dearly; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Hildegard Gramke, and four of his siblings.
Wayne spent his career as a plant manager at Plough in Dayton, Ohio; Franklin International in Columbus, Ohio; and Sherwin-Williams in Atlanta, Georgia. He and Gerry later spent ten wonderful years in Florida before returning home to Columbus.
Anyone who knew Wayne knew that he loved a good story-and had plenty of them to tell. He never met a stranger and could happily strike up a conversation with just about anyone, on just about any subject. He loved fishing, garage sales and college football, especially his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
But nothing mattered more to Wayne than his family, his faith and Gerry, the girl he fell in love with so many years ago.
Wayne was a devoted Catholic whose faith was the foundation of his life. He loved Jesus, rarely missed Mass and made certain his children were raised knowing and practicing their faith. That legacy of belief is one of the greatest gifts he leaves to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Above all, Wayne will be remembered for the life he built with Gerry, his devotion to his family, the stories he loved to tell, and a faith that remained steadfast throughout his life.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Johnstown Pointe nursing home for their kindness and compassionate care, and to Wayne's friend, Father Thomas Anish, who brought him great comfort during his suffering.
In lieu of flowers or contributions, Wayne's family asks simply for your prayers. And when the Buckeyes or Fighting Irish score their next touchdown, think of Wayne-surely cheering right along with you.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 10am until 11am, where a Mass will follow at 11am, at Church of the Resurrection.
