Betty was preceded in death by her parents William Theodore Stribling, Ruby Stribling, Noble Stribling, her husband Billy Joe Self, son Terry Wayne Self, granddaughter Beverly Ann Self, her beloved in-laws, Jake and Annie Ruth Self, and her second husband Jack Tidwell.
Betty graduated from Phillips High School and later went on to graduate from Bessemer Technical College with a degree as an LPN. She married the love of her life, Billy Joe Self, in 1953 and they were married for 29 years before his death at the age of 49. Betty raised her 5 children while continuing to excel at any activity she attempted. She loved gardening, cooking, sewing, crochet, needlework, and cake decorating.
After her husband Billy Joe died, she tackled her next passion— nursing. She was a caring, loving, and attentive nurse to everyone in her care. She worked at Civic Center Nursing Home and retired after working at Jefferson County Nursing Home. She met her second husband, Jack Tidwell, at Jefferson County Nursing Home where he also worked, and they enjoyed 7 years of marriage before he passed away.
After retirement, she continued to care for everyone around her until her later years when she unfortunately developed dementia. She fought a long, hard battle with it and other health problems before her passing. She will be loved and missed by all who knew her.
Betty was laid to rest beside her first husband, Billy Joe on January 13, 2019 in a private graveside service.
