February 10, 1930 – July 9, 2019
Bill Watwood, a resident of Sandusky, Alabama was born on February 10, 1930 and went home to be with the Lord on July 9, 2019 at the age of 89.
Bill was raised with very simple things and pleasures as a boy and he grew up on a farm with six brothers and four sisters. The farm was their livelihood so they all pitched in to make it work.
At the age of 20, Bill joined the Army and he always bragged about having one of the best jobs in Korea; he drove his captain around in a jeep the majority of the time and always said it was the easiest job there.
When he came back to the states his profession was that of a truck driver for the remainder of his working career and he was a proud member of the Teamsters Union. He always believed a man should work hard and put in a full days work.
Bill enjoyed his family and friends and always liked to tell his little jokes and make you laugh. As a younger man he always looked forward to the weekends where he would dress up and meet his friends out for socializing and dancing (he loved dancing). The Kelly Ingram VFW Post 668, where he was a member, was one of his favorite places to go and it was also the location where he celebrated his 80th birthday with his children and friends and he was still dancing.
Bill loved old westerns and TV programs and he loved his Alabama football. He was long-time member of Hillview Baptist Church, and a good Christian man and was always telling people how blessed he was. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Newton and Mary Lucy Watwood, his wife, Lillian Watwood; five brothers, three sisters, and one son, Daniel Andrew Watwood.
Bill is survived by five daughters, Cathy McKay of Crane Hill, AL, Renette Denne (Mark) of Gulf Breeze, FL, Betty Rushing (Rob), Phyllis Palmer, and Lynn Serota of Forestdale, AL; two sons, John Leslie of Forestdale, AL and Rex Watwood (Toni) of Hoover, AL; one brother, Harvey Watwood of Pinson, AL; one sister, Nellie Kelsoe of Hartselle, AL; 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, and a host of friends.
Celebration of Life services will be held at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on Thursday, July 11, 2019 with a time of visitation to begin at 10:00am; funeral at 11:00am followed by his burial in Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
