August 21, 1933 – October 4, 2018
Mr. Charlie “Papa” Tumlin of Gardendale, AL passed away October 4, 2018 at the age of 85. He was born August 21, 1933 in Warrior, AL to the late Seaborn and Blanche Tumlin. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Peggy Gorman Tumlin, his son Chuck Tumlin (Sandra) and grandchildren Kathryn, Jack, and Lauren; and his brother George “Perk” Tumlin. Also remaining to cherish his memory are his nieces Sonja Martin (Larry); Cindy Miller (Jeff); Debbie Brown (Stuart) and their families.
Charlie spent his lifetime in the Gardendale community and surrounding area. He served in the United States Navy and returned home to marry the love of his life in 1958 (January 3, 1959). He worked for South Eastern Metal and finished his working career with Jim Walters Coal in 1992. An avid family man, he was active in the community coaching and supporting youth athletics; and always encouraging his wife and son to follow their dreams. He enjoyed the outdoors; his friendships with others; and following the Alabama Crimson Tide but his most proud moments was the birth of his grand children. A very humble and selfless man … his smile, words of encouragement, hugs, and waves to say a friendly hello will be remembered and missed.
Visitation will be held Sunday, October 7 from 2:00 – 3:30 PM followed by funeral services at Gardendale Mt Vernon United Methodist Church and Interment at Oakwood Cemetery. The family would like to express their appreciation of support from the community, Gardendale Mt Vernon Church; and Reverend Steve Baccus.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missions Fund at Gardendale Mt Vernon United Methodist Church, 805 Crest Drive Gardendale, AL 35071.
