Born on December 16, 1951, in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the beloved daughter of Arlice and Billie Stanford. Cindy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who dedicated her life first and foremost to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her family. After her baby started kindergarten, she returned to school to earn her Master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in education, demonstrating her determination and lifelong love of learning. She then poured her heart into her students and coworkers, touching countless lives through her years in education.
While teaching, Cindy was deeply involved in school activities. She helped keep score at volleyball games and proudly served as a sponsor for both the golf and debate teams. Her encouragement, warmth, and steady presence made a lasting impact on the students she mentored.
In her free time, Cindy found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved getting lost in a good book, spending quiet hours reading and learning. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting, often creating thoughtful handmade gifts that her family will treasure for years to come. She also found peace and satisfaction in gardening, taking pride in tending her flowers and plants and watching them grow. Traveling was one of her favorite things to do, as she cherished opportunities to visit her family, explore new places, and make lasting memories with those she loved.
In her later years, Cindy lived with dementia, a journey that gradually changed her memory but never diminished her loving spirit. Even as the illness progressed, her family found comfort in her smile and in the love that remained evident in her presence. Dementia may have taken pieces of her memory, but it never took the deep love she had for her family, nor the love they have for her.
Cindy married Billy Gray in September of 1972, and together they built a life centered on faith, family, and devotion to one another.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Billie Hood and Arlice Stanford, and her siblings Nola Stewart and David Stanford. She is survived by her loving husband, Billy Gray; her daughters, Amy (Perry) Cox and Tori (Jason) Ledlow; her grandchildren, Annie Nguyen, Josh, Caleb, Zoe, Isabelle, Madi, JaKobi, Christian, Cameron, and Lauren Ledlow, Bria, Brinley, Perry, and Brooklyn Cox; her great grandchildren Cash Stewart and Jojo Adkins; and her sister, Terry Johnson. She also leaves behind extended family members, dear friends, former students, and colleagues who will forever remember her kindness, dedication and love.
A service to celebrate Cindy’s life will be held on February 14th at North Highland Baptist Church in Warrior, Alabama. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Enon Baptist Foster Care Closet. https://enonbc.churchcenter.com/giving
