

Clara Jean Overton Canon was born August 19, 1928 in Tazewell, Tennessee, the only child of Donald and Thelma Overton. She died September 12, 2024 at Orchid Cove in LaBelle, Florida. Clara was a graduate of Bearden High School and obtained a two-year business degree. Clara lived in Gardendale, Alabama for decades. She worked in sales in Mountain Brook, Alabama for many years, including Blach's Department Store and Robin O'Neal. She was a member of the Richmond Baptist Church in Lehigh Acres, Florida. Clara loved sports, including basketball and bowling. She was a huge Tennessee Volunteers fan who almost never missed a game. Go Vols! Clara was a faithful friend who always made the effort to stay in touch with her friends.
Clara is proceeded in death by her husband of 36 years, O.D. Canon, and her two children, Vicki and Eric. She is survived by a granddaughter, Erica Nichols, of Destin, Florida and two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Mills and Josh Varnell, and a great, great granddaughter, Mila Marie Mills.
Special thanks to Brooke Laclair and her family, who took care of Clara for many years, welcomed her into their home and were devoted to her for the rest of her life. Special thanks to Linda Burns and Maria Garcia, both of whom took care of Clara, and to special friends Dona Kloss-Owen, Jean Schlendorf, Hildegard Durham, Keith Staton, Minnie Rast, Robin Chain and others for their love, care and friendship throughout her life. Also, many thanks to her minister and friend, David Soden for his counsel, kindness and devotion to her.
A private service will be held at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel Mausoleum on Friday, September 20, 2024.
