Besides being self-employed with Holmes Shoe Grinder, Donald had a green thumb and loved working in his garden. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Alabama football. He also loved his dogs.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Marie Holmes, and son, David Wayne Holmes. He is survived by his sons, Timothy Aaron Holmes and Steven Ray Holmes; grandchildren, Kimberly Gaither, Brandi Holmes, Zack Holmes, Matthew Aaron Holmes, Karen Holmes, and Nevaeh Holmes; and numerous great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, 2029 Decatur Highway, Gardendale, AL, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with a service following at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Pleasant Mount Baptist Church Cemetery in Remlap, AL.
