Gregory Foster Maxwell, of Gardendale, age 65 died peacefully on Monday, February 21, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Pat Maxwell, nee Slovensky, of Brookside, his four children, Patrick (Leslie) Maxwell, Maggie (Patrick) Horton, Elizabeth (Clay) Cornelius, John (Hope) Maxwell, 9 grandchildren (with another on the way), siblings Shawn, Stephanie, Ramona (Ricky) Holmes, and his mother Bobbie Sue Maxwell. He is preceded in death by his father Robert Maxwell and grandson Foster Maxwell.
Born on May 17th, 1956, he and his family have remained a long-term presence in North Jefferson County. He graduated from Corner High School in 1974, wedded in 1977, and moved to Gardendale to begin a beautiful family. He was an expert real estate agent with Re/Max Southern Homes, helping nearly everyone he knew find their perfect first house or forever home, and was always eager to provide plenty of opinion on what to do and what to look for. On the Board of Directors at Panama City Resort and Club since 2000, he was an eternal admirer of the sun and surf of the gulf coast. He was also a supporter of community theater, having been a member of the Gardendale Arts Council for many years.
He was an avid and exceptional water skier, known in his hey-day for participating in group skiing and just last year successfully slalom skiing on his 65th birthday. He was also an Alabama football fan, having been in New Orleans in 1992 to witness victory over the Miami Hurricanes, and more recently spending countless Saturday afternoons taking his grandchildren to Tuscaloosa for gamedays. He and his wife were also a prominent couple on the wedding reception circuit, most notable for his family’s talents during Proud Mary and other classic songs of that era.
He never missed a Sunday afternoon meal with his family, as he was the family chef, and made sure every child and grandchild had their favorite dish present. His specialties included gumbo, potato salad, bean salad, and a variety of breakfast casseroles at Christmas. He was also famous for his margaritas, an entry that was graciously included in his first recipe book. A lover of food and family, he was working on a second recipe book at the time of his passing.
He loved, was loved, and will be dearly missed. His life will be well remembered by all who met him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Gardendale, AL, with a visitation at 10:00 AM, funeral service at 12:00 PM
