Hugh Mitchell "Sonny" Monaghan

Sonny was born in Nettleton, MS on August 6, 1935. At the age of 12, his family moved from Mississippi to Austin, Texas. He graduated from Travis High School in Austin, TX in 1954. He was married to Sylvia Ann Morgan on March 22, 1958 at Carnation Baptist Church in Okolona, Mississippi.

Sonny worked for many years as a manager and technician at Skil Power Tools. He also worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital and following his retirement, he opened a small engine repair shop at his home.

Sonny was a very active member of Gardendale First Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and volunteered to maintain Camp David in Cullman, AL. He was an avid Alabama football fan and had a passion for gardening and yard work.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Sylvia and his daughters and their spouses; Patia Staton, Penny and David Billings and Patsy and Hank Winks; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Jeri and David McGee, Jacob and Shelley Staton, Julia and Brandon Hill, Marshal Billings, Brodie Winks, Cason Billings, and Dallas Winks; five great grandchildren, Zakary Herring, Kirstin Staton, Makenze Hill, Colton Hill and James Perkins; sisters,Joyce Kuntschik of Austin, Texas and Jo Nell King of San Antonio, Texas, along with, several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel with a time of visitation from 12:00pm to 1:30pm; Celebration of life service at 1:30pm, followed by his burial at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, 1591 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL.
