Hyun Sook "Suzy" Sellers

Hyun Sook was preceded in death by her parents, father, Lee Ti Won, mother Chi Kan Nahng and brother Lee Young Kyu.

Hyun Sook is survived by her husband, Gary Sanders of Birmingham, her daughter, Kathleen Sellers Smith (Alan) of Birmingham, sister- in- law, Kwak Min Jung , brother, Lee Moon Kyu, (wife Han Hei Jong) all of Seoul, South Korea; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Hyun Sook was a caring wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend who loved family. She loved to sing and could have potentially pursued a professional singing career in South Korea. She sang at many different venues in Seoul and was nicknamed “Peggy Lee” for her singing style. She traveled to the US after surviving the Korean War in pursuit of the American dream of a better life.

After arriving in the US, she became a successful professional beautician for almost 50 years and was known for her swift expertise. She energetically encouraged those around her to do their best and worked extremely hard to support her mother and two younger brothers in South Korea. She was a very active fun person who lived as full a life as possible and always made people feel welcome. She loved traveling with her husband in the US and overseas and they had many happy good years together. She also enjoyed being with family and friends. Hyun Sook was artistic, graceful and talented and created lovely original needlework pieces.

Hyun Sook sang in the choir at the Korean Baptist Church in Birmingham earlier in her life and served cheerfully as a deacon and in many other capacities we well. She was also a member of the Korean Association.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Andrea Forbes who was more than a caregiver for Hyun Sook and became part of her family. They would also like to say thank you to Comfort Care Hospice and for all their special care and kindness.

Hyun Sook’s beautiful infectious smile and loving nature will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A visitation for Hyun Sook will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, 2029 Decatur Highway, Gardendale, AL 35071, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.

Hyun Sook will be laid to rest in Oakwood Memorial Gardens, Mausoleum, Gardendale, AL.
