

Mr. Nelson was known as a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was also active at the Fultondale Park as well as a band booster for Fultondale High School. Peanut enjoyed square dancing and Alabama college football. He was a member of Walker's Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee of the church. He was a member of Hewitt North Birmingham Masonic Lodge #519 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Birmingham.
Peanut served in the United States Army where he spent a year in Germany. After being discharged he came back to Birmingham and worked as a truck driver for several companies over the years. He also worked as a dispatcher for O'Neil Steel. He served as a reserve police officer with the city of Fultondale where he also learned to be an EMT. Later he worked at Children's Hospital as a security guard. After retiring he worked at the Senior Citizen Center for the city of Fultondale. Peanut lived a very active life where he was never still.
James “Peanut” Nelson is survived by his 3 children, Howard Nelson (Vicki), Cameron Nelson (Tammy), Darlene Yarbrough (Shane); 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Anita Gail Bell Nelson; father, Howard Emmett Nelson and mother, Iwilda Louise Tidwell Nelson; sisters, Francis Nelson Poland; Carolyn Nelson Adams; brothers, Charles Nelson, Sr.; Robert Nelson, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Tammy Hallman Nelson; and great-grandson, Allen Veasey.
Visitation will be held at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, located at 2029 Decatur Hwy, Gardendale, Alabama, 35071, on October 10, 2025, starting at 1:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life Service will follow at the same venue on October 10, 2025, at 2:00 pm.
The Committal Service is scheduled for October 10, 2025, at Oakwood Memorial Gardens, also located at 2029 Decatur Hwy, Gardendale, Alabama, 35071.
