She will be missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and a whole host of friends, nurses, care-takers and coworkers. She was 90 years young and was still making us all laugh, even during tax season, complete with offers to help anyone who needed help with filing their taxes.
She was a hard worker, a bookkeeper for Shaw Warehouse for about 38 years and started her second job at age 65 for a Orthodontist office. She loved working with numbers and bookkeeping. She had lots of energy and a good work ethic, a rarity these days. She claimed her conserving ways was because she was a Depression baby and she said everyone who lived near her when she was little didn’t have any money either, so they all shared and helped each other. She was funny and saw the humor in a lot of things. She managed to work around some funny, gifted and smart people and usually had a good story to tell. I’m not sure if there is a strip of road in Birmingham, Alabama that she has not driven on, it was as if she had a built in GPS in her brain.
She was a good steward with her money and will always be one of the smartest women I’ve ever known and a staunch environmentalist long before it was a cool thing to do and she was a faithful benefactor to the charities that meant a lot to her such as Saint Jude’s Research Hospital, other environmental agencies and for those who helped the homeless. She had a brilliant mind and great memory and always read so much.
She will be greatly missed, but at the same time I am happy for her to be free of Parkinson’s Disease that muddled her mind with dementia and eventually locked her inside a frail body.
This disease steals your loved ones away one day at a time.
Even though she struggled for the past ten years with this affliction she managed to keep her sense of humor and did not become afraid or angry. I will always admire her spirit for that and so much more. May she enjoy resting with her husband and loved ones who are all at peace now.
