

Janet Kay Ratliff, age 59, of Alabaster, AL, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2012 at Shelby Ridge Nursing Home in Alabaster. She is survived by her father, James Harold Ratliff, Sr.; brother, James (Darlene) Ratliff, Jr.; and a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Janet was preceded in death by her mother Tressie Evelyn Ratliff and her infant sister, Jean Ratliff. She was a member of Berney Points Baptist Church and also attended Parkwood Church of God. She attended West End High School and Bessemer Tech where she received her degree in Cosmetology. After her injury, she went to work at Silver Scissors in Vestavia Hills as a hairdresser / receptionist. Janet dedicated her life to helping others overcome the physical challenges of being in a wheelchair. She was a spokesperson and a role model as Miss Wheelchair Alabama from 1999-2000 and was crowned Miss Shelby Ridge in 2009-2010. Janet’s hobby was collecting frogs (collectables, stuffed animals, etc) after she learned that FROG meant “Fully Rely on God”. Friends and family would bring her different kinds of frogs from the various places they traveled and Janet could not get enough of them. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 10am at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel with funeral services beginning at 11am. Graveside services will be at 2pm at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, AL. Arrangements under the direction of Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, 205-631-6252 in Gardendale, AL.
