Jeanette Evelyn Bailey Smith

Jeanette Evelyn Bailey Smith, age 91 passed away on November 15, 2023. She was born on January 7, 1932 to the late Clifton and Ila Bailey in Ensley, Alabama. Evelyn was the thirteenth of fourteen children. She loved her family dearly and loved being BeBop to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

BeBop loved her church, Springdale Baptist in Tarrant, and when the doors opened, she was there. She was heavy into WMU work, teaching children’s Sunday School, Nursery work, helping in the kitchen, and Vacation Bible School. She was always ready to help with any church function. Springdale has a great loss and Heaven is richer. God blessed us at Springdale by sharing her with us for many, many years.

BeBop loved Elvis Presley, and had many mementos from him. She loved butterflies. As a 70th birthday present, her grandchildren gifted her with a butterfly tattoo on her ankle. She loved all her grandkids and great grandkids and they will surely miss her warmth and encouragement. And on a happy note, to relieve all of you: If you were worried about Heaven’s temperature being a bit cold for you do not worry. BeBop has been there 6 days and I assure you she has already adjusted the thermostats. You will be plenty warm.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Rufus E. Smith; her father, Clifton Owen Bailey, Sr.; her mother, Ila Ayers Bailey; and twelve siblings. Evelyn is survived by her children and their spouses; Tim and Connie Smith, Donna and Gary Curl, Paul and Lara Smith: her grandchildren; her great grandchildren; her sister, Bettye; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2:00 pm.
