Lanny had a deep passion for Harley motorcycles and was known for his craftsmanship in making knives and his collection of guns. He was a proud member of the NRA and USCAA, as well as a respected Mason of Lodge 749. Lanny graduated from Midfield High School in 1974 and attended Gardendale First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Nancy H. Dawson, whom he dated for 8 years prior to marriage. Lanny is also survived by his loving daughter, Lauren Dawson; brother, Paul Dawson; and nieces and nephews: Angel Crosier, Tim Dawson, Shawn Dawson, Leigh Betowt, and Laura Betowt. His faithful canine companions, Spike and Sadie, were also dear to his heart.
Lanny was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse J. Dawson and Mildred E. Dawson, and his sister, Cindy Betowt.
Lanny dedicated many years of his life to his work, starting at US Steel and retiring from PEMCO Aeroplex as a Sheet Metal Fabricator.
A visitation will be held to honor Lanny's memory on Sunday, July 7, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 2:00 pm. Burial will take place immediately afterward at Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
Lanny will be remembered for his love of family, his skilled craftsmanship, and his dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
