Lucy Kate Reese Adkins April 27, 1929-April 4, 2021

Katie went to be with the Lord after living a long full life. She was proud to say she was born a coal miner’s daughter to Fayette and Bessie Reese. Katie lived her entire life in Bradford, Al and never understood why anyone would want to live anywhere else. She was a member of Hughes Memorial Baptist Church. She worked as a office manager at Pinson Medical for many years as well as Medical Center East. She was a member of Civitan International, the Eastern Star and many other organizations. Welcoming her to heaven was the love of her life Glenn Adkins; her parents Fayette and Bessie Reese, her brother Sonny Reese and her son-in-law Jerome McCombs. She is survived by her daughter Glenda Kay McCombs; her grandsons, Adam (Esther) and Mark (Adina); her great-grands Addison, Eleanor Rose and Samuel J.; nephew Randy Reese and Sandy and their children Jeremiah (Ashley) and Laci who helped care for her and several other nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Doris Reese. A special thank you to the staff at Legacy Woods for the kindness and care they gave to her during her last months. They are special people. Recently she described herself well when she said I just love living and she did. She liked Dr Pepper, Sweet Tea, and chocolate. Her love of history was obvious in the stories she loved to tell. Due to Covid there will only be a graveside service at Hopewell cemetery on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 11:00AM. Masks and social distancing required. In lieu of flowers please consider making a contribution in Katie’s memory to Legacy Woods Hayden, Al. or to the Hughes Memorial Benevolence Fund Pinson, Al. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsgardendalechapel.com for the Adkins family.

Katie was very special to our family. She and our daddy grew up together in Bradford. Our dad was a coal miner's son as well. Katie was dad's office manager for many years at Pinson Medical Offices. Glenda, we love you and are praying for you. Your mother was a wonderful lady.

Absent from the body...present with the Lord! I am sure our friend and family member heard our Saviour say on April 4..."Well done my good and faithful servant!" She was there for everyone who met here! We all loved her! I loved watching her and my mom over 60 years ago, with their long gowns flowing, parade around making their little speeches during Eastern Star inaugurations on the top floor of the old Bradford church. Glenda Kay and family...know we all felt how special Katie was. (Have to say as Katie often did, I am proud also of being a coal miner's daughter.)

Thank you (and Mr Adkins) for the prayers and encouragement. As you would say, “So long till we meet again”.

I met Katie several years ago when she was in Austin for her grandson Mark’s wedding. I’m a neighbor to the McCombs family. Katie rode with me to the wedding and I just fell in love with her truly lovely southern spirit. Wow! What a sweetheart!
I know how much she loved visiting and life and her family and dear friends. What a blessing to so many. You will be missed dear Katie. God Bless You.

Aunt Katie was a beautiful lady with a beautiful soul. I tried to call her from time to time to stay in touch. As the years went by she would sometimes drift a bit in our conversations, but she almost always knew who I was and always asked about varoius family members. One of the last conversations I had with Aunt Katie, she told me her job now was to just be Katie. She said I think I make a pretty good Katie. At the time I agreeded, but today I have to disagree slightly. Katie you did not make a pretty good Katie, you made an awesome Katie.

One of the best women that has ever walked earth, full of love for her family as well as everyone else's too. Katie made a difference with her life and loved the life she had. The last thing she told me was to keep my family together and as soon as she closed her eyes here she would open them in heaven. We had a wonderful family, Katie said. Heaven gained a lot when Katie was received.

So many wonderful memories of growing up with Katie and her family! I lovingly thought of her as my third Mama! What a blessing she was to me and my family. What a wonderful Easter Celebration for my Mom, my 2nd Mom, Johnnie Faucett and Katie!! Friends on earth and now forever friends in Heaven. I love you Katie!
