Margie, age 77 of Little Shenandoah, Blount County, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on May 8, 2014. She was preceded in death by her father Robert Burnett; mother, Omie Catchings; step-father, John Catchings; sisters, Lavelle Perkins, Glenda Sweatman, Robbie Perkins; brother Gurley Burnett and brother-in-law, Henry T. South.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Thomas Zales; her Yorkie, Nikkie; daughter, Sharon Kilgore (Ronnie) of Remlap; son, Stephen Zales of Vandiver; daughter, Betsy Zales of Pinson; brother, Raymond Burnett and sister, Imogene Weston (Joe); five grandchildren, Kristie Sparks, Amanda Ingram (Phillip), Scott Zales, Taylor Zales and Tommy Arnold (Jamie); four great grandchildren, Brooklyn & Sydney Ingram, Caleb & Colby Sparks & Ethan Arnold. Other loving survivors are Bernard Zales (Bernice), Bobby Zales (Clara), Billy Zales (Yvonne), Joanne South (Lud), Richard Zales (Norma) and Jimmy Zales and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Margie was born March 16, 1937 in Lamar County. She moved to Birmingham where she attended Ensley High School and was a member of Ensley Baptist Church. Her first job was at Puro’s Ice Cream Parlor in Ensley, then Dewberry’s Engraving. She worked retail for Pizitz and J.C. Pennys at Western Hills Mall. Margie then became a realtor working for CKM and Century 21 until retirement.
Margie had such a zest for life. She and Tommy were members of Shirts and Skirts square dancing club; also, she loved tail gating with Robert & Connie Anderson, Henry & Joanne South at Alabama football games and playing the slot machines at Silver Star.
Margie was sweet, caring and giving. She loved her family & friends. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Services will be held at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel with the family receiving friends for a celebration of her life on Sunday, May 11 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. A funeral service will be Monday, May 12 at 2:00pm with Interment to follow in Oakwood Memorial Gardens, Dr. Gary Fisher officiating.
