Mary graduated from West End High School in 1965. She married Edwin (Buck) Hammonds, Jr. in the fall of 1965 and spent her life as a dedicated wife, homemaker, mother, and teacher to their two girls – Angie and Pam. As the girls grew older, Mary spent several years working as a pharmacy technician – beginning at the local nursing home in Gardendale. She was an avid seamstress, loved all things related to crafts and was also quite the woodworker/construction extraordinaire – through the teaching of her late father, Hilburn (Doc) Williams.
Mary is survived by her loving spouse of 56 years, Edwin (Buck) Hammonds, Jr., her two children, Angela Strickland (and Daniel) of Gardendale, Alabama, and Pamela Bales (and Rick) of Brownsburg, Indiana. She has six grandchildren, Christopher Willingham (and Lillie), Alex Willingham (and Emily), Connor Bales, Jordan Bales, Samuel Strickland, and Abigail Strickland. Mary was proceeded in death by her parents, Hilburn and Wilma Williams, as well as her brother, Ross Williams.
The family will hold a private service at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on November 13, 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Sacred Selections in Mary’s name.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of her caregivers over the last year, especially to Roneisha Seals, for their devoted care of Mom.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsgardendalechapel.com for the Hammonds family.
