Melton Grover “Doddle” Brake was born March 6, 1922 and passed away at his home in Watson, AL surrounded by his family Thursday, August 01, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dicie Brake; three brothers, Arvel, Casey, and Earl; and a sister, Helen Fields. He is survived by his loving family, his wife of 66 years, Irene Beasley Brake; two daughters, Brenda Berry (Fred) and Debra Haynes (Frankie); two grandsons, Kevin Hurley (Jamie) and Jeff Haynes (Jennifer); three great grandchildren, Aaron, Jessica, and Anna. Mr. Brake was a long time member of Brookside Lodge F& AM. He retired from Jefferson County Public Works Department. He proudly served his country as a veteran of the U S Army in WWII and survived four invasions; Silcily, Germany, Normandy, and Northern France. He was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct and a Bronze Star Ribbon. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel from 12 Noon until 2 PM. A graveside service at Bivens Chapel Cemetery officiated by Rev. Thomas Perkins will follow concluded by the Masonic Rites.
The family expresses a special “Thank You “to Bragan and Donna with Care First Hospice for their care and concern during Mr. Brake’s illness. Also, a special thanks to Jamie Hurley for her love and help and to special neighbors, Roger and Debbie Bennett for all they did.
