Robert W. (Bob) Hargreaves, age 91 of Gardendale, passed away peacefully with family members at his bedside on April 23, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold T. Hargreaves and Josephine Luster Hargreaves; his brother Harold T. Hargreaves, Jr.; his sister Irene Hargreaves Chandler; his infant brother John Harold Hargreaves, and his nephew Carl Clayton Chandler.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Clara Hollis Hargreaves. Also left to cherish his memory are nine nieces and nephews: Jan Chandler (Maxine), Trev Hargreaves (Mary), Janice Thorson-Houck (Larry), Judy Waller, Robert F. Wallace, Jr. (Fuji), Sherrilyn Wilson (Kenneth), Rex R. Hollis, Jr. (Jonell), Richard L. Hollis (Vicky), and Rhonda H. Livermore; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Johnnie Phillips Hargreaves. He will be greatly missed by those of us whose lives he touched during his 91-year journey here on Earth.
In his youth, Bob was a remarkable athlete who played football, baseball, and tennis. He was an avid and talented golfer, playing well into his eighties.
For two years immediately following the end of the World War II, Bob served honorably in the U. S. Army. When he came home, he returned to his job as a machinist at Hardie-Tynes Co., Inc., where he worked for 42 years.
Bob was a great blessing to all of his family, always there, quietly helping when anyone needed help in any way. Having a servant’s heart, his generosity and kindness were boundless. He stood for patriotism, loyalty, honesty and honor. Everyone who knew him was aware that he had a big heart for animals, as well. His extraordinary acts of kindness to injured and stray animals are remembered by many.
The family would like to express appreciation to the staff at Cherry Hill Healthcare Center and New Beacon Hospice for their kindness and care at the end of Bob’s life.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 26th at 3:00 PM at Oakwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, 2100 Moncrief Road in Gardendale with visitation one hour prior to the service. Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel will be directing.
