Sammie Edward Maze

Services for Mr. Maze of Kimberly, Alabama, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, at Kimberly Church of God in Kimberly, Alabama. The Rev. Stan Cooke and the Rev. Chris Sansing will officiate at the services.

Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the church prior to the service.

Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Gardendale, Alabama.

Sam was born on Monday, Sept. 29, 1947, the son of Edward and Maylene Maze of Kimberly. He graduated from Mortimer Jordan High School in 1965 and received his Bachelor of Science from Lee College in 1971 where he met his future wife, Beverly Muncy. They were married on Saturday, Aug. 26, 1972. He served in the United States Army from 1972-1973. After his service to his country, they moved to back to North Jefferson County, Alabama, where they built their family.

He was a retired rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Irondale, Alabama. He was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and served as a district representative, vice president and state president of the Alabama Rural Letter Carriers Association. He also served as a public servant for the Town of Kimberly, first as a City Councilman from 1982-1984 and then as Mayor from 1984 until 2008.

Sam was an avid Auburn fan who loved artwork containing eagles. He loved his family and was a devout Christian. He was a lifelong member of the Kimberly Church of God, where he was a Sunday school teacher and held various leadership positions including Sunday school superintendent, member of the church and pastor’s council and the elders’ board. He raised his three children and three grandchildren in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and always provided for them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Maylene Maze; his brother, the Rev. C. Michael Maze; and his sister, Kay (Horace) Pannell.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Beverly Muncy Maze; his two sons, Jonathan (Dasha) Maze of New Port Richey, Florida, and Brent Maze of Greenwood, Mississippi; his daughter, Deanna (the Rev. Chris) Sansing of Morris, Alabama; his grandsons who were his pride and joy, Samuel Sansing, Aaron Sansing and Micah Sansing; two sisters-in-law, Christina Turner of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dr. Kathy Maze, of Gardendale, Alabama; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Samuel Sansing, Aaron Sansing, Micah Sansing, the Rev. Chris Burns, Chris Taylor Burns, Stuart Nash, Charlie Nash and Curtis Smith.

Ridouts Funeral Home in Gardendale, Alabama, is in charge of arrangements.
