

Ted spent 40 years as a devoted mechanic for Davidson Trucking, where his skill, loyalty, and steady presence became part of the company’s foundation. He loved to fish with his sisters and embraced life with a joyful, easygoing spirit that made everyone around him feel at home.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Patricia Smelley; his mother, Mavis Kent; his son, Derek Smelley; and his sisters, Linda Davidson and Janice Hunsberger,all of Fultondale, Alabama. He leaves behind a host of extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Ted is preceded in death by his father, Clarence D. Smelley; his stepfather, Bill Kent; and his grandparents, J.T. and Annie Smelley, and Dean F. and Lizzie Thorn.
Ted’s gentle nature, steady hands, and loving heart touched everyone blessed to know him. His memory will remain a source of comfort, strength, and joy to all who loved him.
Visitation will be held at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel in the Fireside Room, 2029 Decatur Hwy, Gardendale, Alabama 35071, on September 17, 2026, at 12:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel in the Chapel, 2029 Decatur Hwy, Gardendale, Alabama 35071, on September 17, 2026, at 1:00 pm. The service will be officiated by Pastor Debbie Franks and Pastor J.R. Cunningham.
Final Resting Place will be at Pawnee Cemetery, 2370 Hewitt Dr, Birmingham, AL 35217.
