

GySgt Terry Wayne Raney, Sr., a decorated Vietnam Veteran and retired Gunnery Sergeant of the United States Marine Corps, passed away peacefully at the age of 80. Terry was born to Hulet J. Raney and Vaudie B. Raney on May 17, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Terry's commitment to service began early, joining the United States Marine Corps, where he served with distinction for 20 years, including two tours in Vietnam. His dedication earned him numerous accolades, and he was known affectionately by his students as "The Gunny” during his time as an JROTC instructor at Round Rock High School.
Outside his military career, Terry embraced life with a passion for family, friends, and his interests. He married his beloved Mary F. Raney, and together they shared 46 years of love and companionship until her passing. Terry was a devoted father to his daughter Teresa M. Huggins and her husband Robert and son Terry W. Raney, Jr. and his significant other Kay Hicks, and a proud grandfather to Taylor Huggins, Trevor Huggins, Joshua Pruitt, Gregory Pruitt, Travis Raney, Walker Raney, and Kayleigh Raney. He is preceded in passing by his wife, Mary F. Raney; his parents, Hulet J. and Vaudie B. Raney; his daughter, Sandra L. Pruitt; his two brothers; and his three sisters.
Known for his strong will and stern yet loving demeanor, Terry's presence brought joy to family gatherings, especially when he showcased his skills as a barbecue enthusiast. Later in life, he developed a sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him, lightening the seriousness of life's obstacles.
Terry enjoyed traveling, and would reminisces about his travels with the United States Marine Corps. He considered Texas his beloved home and had fond memories of his time there.
An avid learner of history and collector of coins, Terry also had a passion for cars, RVs, antique shopping, and Western movies. His membership in the Brookside Masonic Lodge #552 and his role as a deputy Sheriff for Jefferson County added to his rich life of service and community engagement.
Terry Raney, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of honor, courage, and love. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his lifetime of service and dedication.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 29th, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel. A celebration of Terry's life will immediately follow and he will be laid to rest with military honors at Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
