William R. “Willie” Hollis, age 88, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014. Mr. Hollis was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Waldrop Hollis, three brothers and four sisters. Mr. Hollis was born in Columbus, MS. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Davis and his son, Thomas Hollis (Suzie); four grandsons, Scott and Lee Bennefield, Brandon and Matthew Hollis (Morgan); one great granddaughter, Lily Grace; he was also survived by fourteen nieces and nephews. He was a member of East Gardendale Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and fought “The Battle of Midway Island”. He retired from Alabama By-Products, Inc. after 43 years to care for his ailing wife. All who knew him enjoyed his wit and humor. He was always willing to help family, friends, neighbors, and strangers with whatever they needed. He enjoyed planting and caring for his garden every year and enjoyed hunting with his grandson Scott. An avid animal lover, he loved his dogs and cats to the moon and back.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 23rd, at 12 Noon at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Gardens. Rev. Allen Davis will officiate.
