Doreen Dagmar Tormala Lockwood of Dallas, and previously Georgetown, entered the Kingdom of God on January 1, 2022, at the age of 90. Doreen is survived by her sons Paul (Patricia) of San Antonio, Alan (Flavia) of Covington, Louisiana, and daughter Carol (Rodney) Sowards of Dallas, brother Ken (Susie) Tormala of Bath, Michigan, sisters-in-law Marilyn Harkness of Sugar Land and Kathy Tormala of O’Fallon, Missouri, as well as eight grandchildren; Travis Sowards, Matthew (Brittany) Sowards, Winslow and Claire Sowards, Eric and Emma Lockwood, Samantha (Mike) Trezek and Nathan Lockwood. Doreen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years Lloyd Lockwood, her parents Aldrick and Aili Tormala, her father- and mother-in-law Wilber and Emma Lockwood, her brother Alden Tormala, her brothers-in-law Robert and Edmond Lockwood, and Llewellyn Harkness III, and her daughter-in-law Katherine Lockwood.
Doreen was born in Hancock, Michigan on August 22, 1931 and grew up in nearby Chassell (Portage Entry) where she graduated high school. She then attended Michigan Tech University where she soon met her future husband Lloyd. Doreen graduated 1953 with a BS in General Science (Medical Technology major). Doreen and Lloyd were married September 5, 1953.
In 1955 the couple moved to Midland, MI and began concurrent careers with Dow Chemical, with Doreen employed in their Toxicology Department. In 1960, Doreen left Dow to become a wonderful mother to her children Paul, Carol and Alan. Lloyd’s career brought the family to St. Louis, Missouri in 1969, Russellville, Arkansas in 1970 and back to Midland in 1975. In 1977 she rejoined Dow’s toxicology group where she worked until the family transferred to Lake Jackson, Texas in 1979. Shortly thereafter she joined Dow’s toxicology group in Freeport where she worked until her retirement in 1992.
Lloyd and Doreen moved to Georgetown, Texas in 1994. They enjoyed visiting with children and grandchildren, going on frequent cruises and spending parts of each summer back at Doreen’s childhood home in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. They were very active in their home congregation of Faith Lutheran Church where Doreen was a member of Faith’s Helping Hand LWML group and was one of the founders of Faith’s OWLS (Older, Wiser Lutherans). Doreen also regularly volunteered at the Georgetown’s The Caring Place. In late 2013 Doreen suffered a stroke that left her in a wheel chair and forced her to relearn speech. With Lloyd at her side, she was soon smiling, talking and sharing laughs again. Doreen lived at home until 2016 when the onset of dementia necessitated a move to memory care facilities where Lloyd remained her daily companion until the Lord called him home in 2019. Doreen then moved to Dallas where the Lord blessed her and her family with over two more years together before she too was peacefully called home in the morning of the first day of a new year.
Doreen’s funeral service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, Georgetown, 2pm Saturday January 15. Burial will be at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery and Mausoleum, Pflugerville, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Faith Lutheran Church, The Caring Place (Georgetown), or a charity of your choice.
