

Al Marcus Nelson was the first born son to Alvin and Mary Alice Nelson on March 25, 1972, in San Antonio,Texas. He attended the public schools of North East Independent School District in San Antonio until his junior year when he transferred to Judson ISD. He graduated from Judson High School in 1990. Upon graduation, he attended Abilene Christian University (ACU) to obtain his Bachelor of Science. He later obtained a Masters and Doctorate degrees in Educational Administration from Texas A&M- Commerce, where he also fulfilled a lifetime dream of becoming a member of the distinguished organization, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Marcus began his mission of educating children as an elementary & high school teacher in Garland, Texas and an administrator in McKinney, Texas. He moved to the central Texas area to serve as the Principal at Connally High School in Pflugerville and several years later, as a Director in the Austin ISD. He finally had the chance to return to his Alma Mater as the Associate Superintendent in Judson ISD. He accepted the exciting opportunity to lead Laredo ISD as Superintendent of Schools where he would serve for the next 8 years. Wanting to move closer to family, he accepted the position of Superintendent at Waco ISD in 2017. In his recent retirement, he had plans to inspire others through his motivational speaking.
Marcus married Julie Dickens in 1994, who he met and fell in love with while attending ACU. From this union, they had 2 sons together; Austin and Callen Nelson.
Marcus accepted Christ at an early age growing up, at Trinity Baptist Church of San Antonio, Texas. He was an active member in MacArthur Park Church of Christ youth group in San Antonio and has attended many special churches during his lifetime. For the last decade, he has attended Grace Bible Church of Georgetown, Texas.
He is preceded in death by both Paternal and Maternal Grandparents; (P)Alvin Nelson Sr. & Kitty Mae Hunter, (M)James Perkins & Ada Mae Walford.
He leaves to cherish everlasting memories: his wife, Julie Nelson; 2 boys, Austin and Callen Nelson; his parents, Alvin Nelson Jr. & Mary Alice Feathers; 1 brother, Alvin Nelson III (Moeleke); In- laws, Richard and Peggy Dickens; brother in-law, Matthew Dickens (Seth-nephew); several aunts, and a host of cousins and friends who will miss his cheerful smile and “hard work” till the end of time.
Should you still be looking for a way to remember Marcus, a college fund (a fitting tribute) has been established for Marcus’s two boys Austin (16) and Callen (9).
