Emma Jane Sexton Finch was called to her heavenly home on May 11, 2026, at the age of 99 years. Born to LW and Ella Sexton on January 3, 1927, in Connersville, Indiana, she was one of eight children. Family has always been her treasure; growing up with 3 brothers and 3 sisters, life was always busy and never boring. During school days and always with family, she was called Emma Jane; adult friends know her as Jane; and now in the twilight years, her preference is Emma Jane.
Emma Jane met her husband Joe right after high school and right before Joe enlisted in the US Army to defend our country in World War II. Emma Jane kept the home fire burning with hope of his return and promise of their life together. Emma Jane and Joe were married in August of 1946 and spent the next twenty years in Indiana. They raised 2 girls, Linda and Denice, who were also born in Connersville.
In 1966, Joe’s work moved the family to Dallas, Texas. It was in Dallas that Emma Jane fell in love with Jesus and with Bible Study. Although by God’s grace Emma Jane had accepted his gift of salvation at age 24, Bible study and prayer strengthened her faith. Her excitement with God’s word was contagious. As soon as the girls left for school each morning, the kitchen table welcomed neighborhood ladies, their Bibles, commentaries, and conversations about God’s word. It was a shift from knowing about God’s Son to knowing Jesus, the solid rock, worthy of all praise, honor, and glory. From that awareness forward, it was important to share with others; in this, she did not hesitate.
Retirement began for Joe and Emma in 1982 in Savannah, Georgia with a home near a golf course. They were active members of their church and enjoyed the many friendships on Skid Away Island. In 1990, Emma and Joe moved to Georgetown, Texas where they built a home at Berry Creek. The best part of the Georgetown move was that finally they would be close to their girls, Linda and Denice.
Emma Jane quickly joined neighborhood Bible studies. She hosted a Bible Study Fellowship group and invited as many as the house would hold. Emma’s hearing loss was a hindrance in a group, but not one-on-one. Emma made the most of loving others with the Gospel, in that she was fearless. Jesus said to tell the world. Emma did that.
Emma and Joe joined First Baptist Church Georgetown in the early ‘90s. They were active in Sunday School and enjoyed volunteer events. Emma added her name to the list of nursing home visitors and was known as the ‘bread lady’ because she always brought sweet bread for the residents. Emma was part of the prayer chapel ministry at First Baptist. It was perfect for her! It was quiet, peaceful and powerful. Hearing loss was a blessing in those intimate moments at the prayer chapel.
Emma Jane enjoyed lifelong friendships with many at First Baptist, with neighbors at Berry Creek, Sun City, and most recently with those at Platinum Resort, Assisted Living and Memory Care. It is there that Emma Jane adopted a new family of friends who will forever be remembered for their love and kindness.
Thinking about Emma Jane’s favorite things, shopping would be near the top of the list. Even when mobility became an issue, she would save her money and her strength for a planned day of shopping. Emma Jane loved to watch PGA tournaments on TV, and she kept up with the personal lives of the golfers, especially Tiger Woods. She loved Texas Longhorn Football; if she could find the right channel, Emma would follow the game from start to finish. Of course, four-legged friends were always part of the family; when she became unable to have one of her own, she welcomed her daughters’ dogs to spend the day. Emma Jane is forever proud of her family, for any success they have in life. Emma prayed every day for each one by name and for God’s strength, comfort and favor to bless them.
Emma Jane was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents LW and Ella Sexton, four brothers- Tom Sexton (Janet), Delbert Sexton (Violet), Jasper Sexton, Bob Sexton, two sisters - Elizabeth Sexton and Margie Sherwood (Omer), and one brother-in-law James Maxwell.
Emma Jane is survived by her two daughters Denice Finch and Linda Montague, her granddaughter Sherry Lin and husband Dr. Scott Franklin, 3 great grandchildren, Jenna Whitehead (James), Jace Franklin (Claire) and Joshua Franklin. Emma is also survived by one sister Margaret Maxwell, a sister-in-law Sandra Cunningham, and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
