Soon after birth, his family relocated to Miami, Florida where he lived most of his youth and early adulthood. There he learned his love for the sea, fishing, and adventure by working on his father’s fishing boats.
Later he would enlist in the Navy and serve in the Vietnam War on the destroyer Brumby, in the Tonkin Gulf. After the military, he held a high-level national security clearance doing underwater research on the Oceanic.
In 1979, he flew to Houston, where he met the love of his life, Darla. The next day, she flew back home to Florida with him. Neither of them knew it, but that marked the beginning of a relationship that would last 45 years.
Together, they moved back to Houston and got married in 1981, and in 1982 they welcomed their first child, a son, Matthew Harrison Metcalfe. Frank worked for AECO for over 15 years and was transferred to the Austin area. In 1986, Frank and Darla welcomed their second child, a daughter, Nataly Ruth Rulmyr. Frank then started an incredibly successful home building and remodeling company FCS, which helped him build their family home in Leander, Texas.
In 2014, Frank joined Biker’s Against Child Abuse (BACA) where he lovingly went by the road name “RightSide”. He was dedicated to their mission: “We empower abused children to not be afraid of the world in which they live.”
He also volunteered his time to the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center (WCCAC), continuing the mission of helping and serving children and families throughout central Texas. His dedication and hard work created a lasting legacy that will impact others for years to come.
Frank was very proud of his 13 years of sobriety. Beyond that, he took the time to help others achieve and maintain their sobriety, even visiting prisons to help people struggling with addiction before their release. His sobriety was one of his greatest accomplishments.
Throughout his life, Frank enjoyed the sea, and his passion for fishing and boating led him to take his family on many adventures. His last fishing trip was in 2023, when he took his granddaughter Sailor out deep-sea fishing and they caught a giant redfish!
Frank passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife Darla and surrounded by his daughter and granddaughter.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Captain Frank Harrison Metcalfe, his mother; Marie Ann Metcalfe, and his sister Ann Martin. Frank is survived by his wife of 45 years, Darla Kay Metcalfe; children, son Matthew Harrison Metcalfe, daughter Nataly Ruth Rulmyr and her Husband Michael Alex Rulmyr, and his absolute joy, his only granddaughter Sailor Rose Rulmyr. He is also survived by his nieces; Michelle Ullrich, and husband C.J. Ullrich and their children Madison and Kevin Chandlee and Kate Ullrich; Niece Ashley Price and husband Colton Lyons and second niece Merrina Price. He also leaves behind many friends and Brothers and Sisters in B.A.C.A. He will be sorely missed to those he left behind, but we are thankful of the Legacy and impact that remains on earth.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the organizations he loved, BACA, and the Williams County Children’s Center in the honor of Frank Metcalfe or RightSide.
