Gloria L. (Sweeney) Champ, 90, passed away peacefully at home in Georgetown, Texas, on August 31, 2025.
Born on June 23, 1935, in Geddes, South Dakota, Gloria was the daughter of Barney and Hazel (Aslin) Sweeney. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell, South Dakota, in 1953 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Creighton University in 1958.
On December 27, 1958, Gloria married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” A. Champ, in Mitchell, South Dakota. Together they built a home and raised their family in Sioux City, Iowa, where Gloria lived for 55 years before moving to Georgetown, Texas, after Dick’s passing in 2018—happily trading Iowa winters for the Texas heat she had always loved.
Gloria held a variety of jobs throughout her life, most recently serving as an administrative assistant in the Diocese of Sioux City Education Department. She was a devoted Catholic and active member of her parishes, including Blessed Sacrament in Sioux City where she served as a greeter, and St. Helen’s in Georgetown, where she was a member of the Adoration team.
As the wife of a sportswriter and sister-in-law to a high school coach, Gloria was a proud and familiar face in the stands at countless sporting events. She was the official scorekeeper for the Donovan Construction Little League team, cheered enthusiastically at her children’s and grandchildren’s games, and was a lifelong fan of Creighton basketball. She was also an avid reader who especially enjoyed novels by James Patterson and John Grisham, and she was a proud member of the Red Hat Club in Sioux City.
Gloria was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick; her parents, Barney and Hazel Sweeney; father and mother-in-law, Delbert and Dorothea Champ, her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Roger Higgins; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janice and Gordon F. Gill; her brother-in-law Jerry Champ; and her great-granddaughter, Sunny Rae Dimig.
She is survived by her five children: Chris (Beth) of Haltom City, TX; Andy Champ-Doran (Tonia) of Kingston, NY; Mike (Judy) of Las Vegas, NV; Mark (Tricia) of Georgetown, TX; and Beth Dimig (John) of Wickenburg, AZ. She is also survived by her grandchildren: CJ Champ, Tanner Champ, Noah Champ, Carter Champ, Quentin Champ-Doran, Bellanora Champ-Doran, Pauline Champ, Sarah Shannon (Michael), Doug Dimig (Becca), and Jennifer Dimig (fiancé Darian Tillman); and great-grandchildren Robby Dimig and Rowan Dimig. Gloria also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City, Iowa, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, 2802 Casselman St., Sioux City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bishop Heelan Catholic High School.
The Champ family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers of the Assisted Living Unit at The Oscar at Georgetown, especially NeNe and Sarah, for the warmth and happiness they brought to Gloria's final years.
