Ken was born in Tacoma Park, Maryland on January 5, 1969, to Philemon and Christianah (Ekeke) Onwere. He graduated from Aquinas Secondary School (Ghana) in 1983. He then pursued undergraduate studies at Glendale Community College (California), followed by attendance at the Adventist Seminary of West Africa (Nigeria) before transferring to Pacific Union College (California), where he graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in Biochemistry in 1989. In the fall of that same year, Ken began medical studies at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. After just a few years as a medical student, Ken reconsidered his career goals, later turning a hobby working on ‘computers’ into a successful career path. At the time of his death, Ken was doing what he loved working as a Senior Systems Administrator for the University of Texas At Austin.
On April 10, 2002, Ken welcomed his son, Donovan, into his life, and remained committed and invested in his role as a father.
Ken possessed a very curious mind and a deep knowledge for many things. In fact, he was often regarded by siblings and cousins alike as the ‘Family Historian’ because of an uncanny ability to recall and effortlessly explain the intricacies of the collection of traditions, culture, and values that is a part of the Onwere family’s Nigerian ancestral heritage. Over the last few years, Ken found personal fulfillment from his active involvement in organizations that seek to preserve those cultural values and sense of belonging, such as the Ngwa National Association USA (NNAUSA).
Remaining to cherish Ken’s memory are his son, Donovan Onwere; his parents, Philemon and Christianah Onwere; siblings, Donald ‘Chiboy’ Onwere, Princewell ‘Chinedu’ Onwere, Joyce ‘Mgbechi’ (Uzoma Nwankwo) Onwere, Ike (Kesa) Onwere, Christopher ‘Chinonye’ Onwere; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Ken was preceded in death by: Kingsley ‘Chuchu’ Onwere.
