Shirley was born on July 24, 1935 in Rosebud, Texas to Lester (Less) William Lierman and Irene Marie Marek Lierman. She grew up in the farmlands around Rosebud, where her family owned and operated a farm and small dairy. She graduated from Rosebud High School in 1953 and attended Business School in Austin, Texas. Upon graduation, she met her loving husband Eric Miller who was student teaching at Rosebud prior to entering flight school for the United States Air Force. They were wed on September 4, 1955 and celebrated 60 years together.
Shirley proudly served as a military wife and enjoyed being the constant at home as her family grew. After her sons were grown and working part time jobs over the years, she was hired full time as the Executive Secretary for the Southwestern University Athletic Department in December 1976 until February 1997.
She thoroughly enjoyed serving the athletic directors, coaches, and athletes at Southwestern and considered all of them her friends. Always the fan, she was dedicated in attending all the athletic sports to cheer on the Pirates. The students always found comfort and laughter on the couch in her office and they always referred to her as “MOM”. Shirley was always willing to give them some good parental advice when she thought they needed some direction in life. The entire job was pure joy to her.
After retiring, Shirley enjoyed short travel trips, spending time with Eric, her boys, and grandkids. She took joy in gardening, cooking, playing bridge, walking, and keeping up with her Aggie sports in Aggieland.
Shirley loved her church and all the people of Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg, Texas. She enjoyed all her friendships there and love participating as a “welcomer”, as a member of the braille group, and being involved with the annual Wurstbraten event.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Eric; brother, Toby Lierman and wife Gwen; sister in law, Margie Lierman.
She is survived by her brother, Bill Lierman; sons, Mark and wife Donna, Brad and wife Lynn; granddaughters, Megan, Rachel and Bailey; grandsons, Eric and Rich; many loving nephews and nieces.
