Virginia attended K-12 in public schools in Pratt, Kansas. She was sandwiched between her younger brother Carl McGuire and her older sister, Dorothy McGuire Goff. After completing school in Pratt, she furthered her education by attending Kansas State University where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. After graduation, her first job was teaching Home Economics in Greensburg, Kansas, where she taught for two years.
While at Kansas State University, she met her husband to be, Clinton H. Davis of Harveyville, Kansas. Once Clinton finished his degree in Electrical Engineering, they were married in the Presbyterian Church of Pratt, Kansas on July 2, 1950. They were married for 63 years prior to Clinton’s passing 10 years ago.
Being a young engineer, Mr. Davis moved his family frequently to advance his career. One stop in Richmond, Indiana was where Virginia gave birth to their first son, Curtis Edward Davis; then four years later, their second son, Randall Allen Davis. Further relocation took them to other cities in Indiana, New Jersey and finally, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Their final relocation was to retire in Sun City, Texas but ostensibly was to follow their only grandchildren, the twins Katherine (Kate) and Madeline (Maddy) Davis.
When Virginia wasn’t attending some granddaughter related function, she could usually be found on the golf course. Virginia was a serious golfer for over 60 years. She played once or twice a week for decades. Virginia played her final round when she was 90.
She was a dedicated housewife and mother and found joy in being an accomplished seamstress/tailor and cook/baker. She, her husband and sons proudly wore custom made sport coats, jackets and robes. She taught sewing tips and techniques to any who would ask. Also, no birthday was complete without a birthday pie. No one could surpass her cherry or apple crumb pies.
In later years, she enjoyed just sitting on the back porch at their Rockport, Texas getaway, “Casa Rockport”. She enjoyed watching the occasional dolphin breach the bay’s water and the myriad of ducks, terns and pelicans that entertained her off the back porch. When she shared those times with her grandchildren, the smile was even bigger.
Virginia leaves behind to cherish her memory her son Randall, his wife Christine, Kris Nowak, widow of son Curtis and her loving granddaughters, Kate and Maddy Davis. Both Virginia’s siblings, Carl McGuire and Dorothy Goff had passed earlier. Mrs. Davis also leaves behind nieces and nephews whose company she enjoyed immensely. Her trips to Kansas to visit them are remembered fondly. To them, she was “Aunt Virginia”.
Virginia was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Georgetown for many years.
Randall, Christine, Kate and Maddy wish to express our thanks to the folks at Wesleyan Skilled Nursing, Wesleyan Memory Care & Assisted Living and Wesleyan Hospice for the help, assistance and care they gave to Virginia.
The Davis family requests in lieu of flowers, any memorial donations be made to your own favorite charity.
