Minister Will Jenkins, Jr. made his transition to eternal life on August 19, 2020. Born to Will Jenkins and Ethel Irene Jenkins (Bonner), he was a graduate of San Angelo Central High School and furthered his education at Angelo State University and Platt Business College, where he majored in Business Administration and Public Speaking.
He was saved at the age of 12 and began his walk with the Lord at Alexander Temple Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in San Angelo, Texas, where The Reverend W.W. Weatherspoon was pastor and later New Light Baptist Church under the leadership of The Reverend L.E. Pope. Will received the call to the ministry at the age of 14, and continued his spiritual growth at New Jerusalem COGIC where The Reverend C.S. Johnson was pastor, followed by The Reverend James H. Anderson, who became his mentor. He was an active church member in the Baptist Training Union (BTU), Sunday school, choir, Young People Willing Workers (Y.P.W.W), and served on the usher board. He held the office of deacon, choir director, and Sunday school teacher and superintendent. Additionally, he preached at district and state convocations, presided over revivals, and also served as interim pastor at Mason Chapel Church of God in Christ in Brady, Texas.
A licensed minister for over 30 years, Will joined the Friendly Will (M) Baptist Church family in 2010. He was a faithful member serving as a trustee, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, praise team member, and what he has always considered his most important and joyful service of all, a voice to deliver sermons of God’s Word. He was a two-time recipient of the William Thrash Award for excellence in ministerial service and could often be heard preaching and then saying ‘Amen Brother Will’ during his message as God’s Word touched his heart.
His other joys were fishing, singing, watching the Cowboys, and laughing (as he was an everyday prankster), talking to his family on the phone, giving Momma Bernadean a hard time with love, spending time with the pastor/ministers/deacons of the church, and hanging out with his life partner, Latoya (aka Honey).
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Latoya, his children, David Blaylock (Cassie) of San Angelo, Maria Jenkins-Lewis (Garry) of San Antonio, Jeffrey Jenkins of San Angelo, Natalie Jenkins-Wilson (Gerald) of Shreveport, Louisiana, Bernadette Hoffman of San Angelo, and Naquita Hoffman of San Angelo, brother Mathan Jenkins of Lake City, Florida, sisters Ethel Jenkins and Sheila Jenkins both of San Angelo, nieces La
Monique Parker (Ishma) of San Angelo, and Dallas Lewis (Darius) of Austin, mother-in-law Bernadean McGaha of Georgetown, brother and sister-in law Lonnie and Bianca Sandoval of Round Rock, 10 grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Will was preceded in eternal rest by his parents, nephew Brandon, and niece Montoya.
We will all miss you Will - you wore many hats - husband, dad, granddad, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, cousin, classmate, co-worker, and friend. But the hat you were most proud to display is being a Child of the Most High King, and we know you are resting in Him. So, until we all see you again, when we will separate no more, we love you.
The family would like to thank everyone for your heartfelt prayers, kind words and deeds, beautiful flowers, and acts of love. Additionally, should you choose, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in Will’s honor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Friendly Will Missionary Baptist Church on Friday, August 28, 2020 at 1 pm. There will be a visitation just beforehand, beginning at noon.
