Bill was born on November 18, 1940 to Judson and Patricia Cumberland in Norfolk, Nebraska. Bill was a devout Catholic and the ethics and morals he portrayed in his life were a direct result of his Catholic upbringing. He met his wife of sixty years, Margaret O’Brien, in elementary school. Bill graduated from Geneva High School and went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska in 1962. Soon after, he went to work for IBM as a Computer Programmer and later as a Manager. His employment with IBM took them to several cities, including Georgetown, Texas where they put down roots and never left. No matter where Bill lived, he never forgot his Nebraskan heritage and he was proud of it. He was a lifelong, die hard Cornhusker fan and especially enjoyed watching them win!
Bill and Margaret were blessed with three wonderful children along the way, Mike, Christen and Mark. Bill was the father of the family in the strongest sense, teaching his children lifelong lessons and the importance of hard work and civility. He loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in their events and was very proud of them each in their own right. Bill and Margaret spent time traveling and eventually bought a cabin in Ohio City, Colorado where family and friends would gather in the summer. Bill was an avid shooter and participated in many “Cowboy Shoots” over the years, where he would dress in authentic cowboy attire and compete against other cowboy shooters in various events.
Anyone who knew Bill will tell you he was a very bright, interesting and loving man. Although sometimes quiet, he was always listening. He was unique in how he lived his life, full of authenticity and realness. Bill loved to read and devoured thousands of books and newspaper articles over his lifetime. More than anything else, he loved being with family on holidays and get togethers. His was a life well lived and all those who knew him are going to miss him very much. He was one of the really good guys.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan Wells-Souza.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son, Mike and his wife Karen and their children Allison and Maty; a daughter, Christen and her husband Craig and their children Jodi and Jason; a son, Mark and his wife Sirenna and their children Jordan and Raegan; a sister, Judy Ousey; a sister, Mary Bruning and her husband Roger; and a brother in law, Robert Souza.
